English is a priority area in the School Strategic Plan. The program is relevant to students and their everyday experiences and promotes development in the areas of Speaking and Listening, Writing and Reading, equipping students with the skills to communicate and learn in a variety of ways. The Reading Recovery program is implemented to assist Year 1 students who need individual assistance in reading. A Literacy Intervention Program is also implemented in the school. Parents are welcome to take part in our Training Parent Helpers program, which aims to assist parents to better support their children’s learning at home and school. English as a Second Language (ESL): Our school population is made up of approximately 55% of students from non-English speaking backgrounds. To assist students to develop their English skills, extra help is provided either in the classroom with the class teacher or by withdrawing these students from the classroom in small groups, so that they can receive extra tuition in reading, writing and spoken language. The emphasis of this program is to provide a wide range of experiences, which are relevant to the students and their curriculum program being currently undertaken in the class.
